Before you buy an AC: installation checklist

A good AC can still disappoint if it is the wrong size or badly installed. Think about these points before you buy, and ask the installer to see the place first.

What to decide before buying

• Size of the AC. As a rough guide, a 1 ton AC suits a small room up to about 120 sq ft, and a 1.5 ton AC suits around 150 to 200 sq ft. Rooms with strong sun, a top-floor roof or a kitchen need more. A technician should confirm the size.
• Inverter or non-inverter. Inverter ACs usually cost more at first, but they use less electricity when the AC runs for long hours.
• Place for the outdoor unit. It needs fresh air around it and safe access for cleaning and service. A very hard-to-reach spot makes every future service difficult and more expensive.
• Pipe length and drain. A shorter pipe run cools better, and the drain pipe must slope so water flows out and does not drip inside.
• Power supply. An AC needs its own wire of the correct thickness and a breaker of the right size. Do not run it from a shared extension board.
• Wall and bracket. The wall and the outdoor bracket must be strong enough to hold the weight.
