Geyser safety tips for winter: keep your bathroom safe

Every winter, geysers go back to work after months of sitting unused. A little care now keeps the hot water running and your family safe, especially with gas geysers, which need fresh air to burn properly.

Check ventilation first

A gas geyser uses the air in the room. If the bathroom is small and closed, the flame can burn badly and produce carbon monoxide, a gas with no smell or colour that is dangerous to breathe. Keep a window or exhaust fan working, and make sure the geyser's flue (the chimney pipe) is fitted and not blocked. Wherever possible, install the geyser outside the bathroom or in a well-ventilated space.

Simple winter checklist

• Look at the flame. A steady blue flame is normal. A yellow or orange flame, black soot or a flame that keeps going out needs a technician.
• Check for a gas smell near the geyser and pipe joints. If you smell gas, do not touch any switch or light a match. Open the windows, close the gas valve and call us.
• Turn the geyser off when you do not need hot water, instead of leaving it running all day.
• Look at the pipes and connections for water drips or rust.
• For an electric geyser, make sure it has a proper earth connection and that the thermostat works.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if the water stays cold or becomes too hot, if the geyser makes banging noises, if you see a leak, or if an electric geyser keeps tripping the breaker. These are signs of a fault that should be checked before the geyser is used again.
