Washing machine problems: simple fixes and when to call us

Most washing machine problems start small. Here are the common ones and what you can try. Always switch the machine off and unplug it before touching any part.

Common problems

• Water does not drain. Check the drain hose for kinks and clean the drain filter or pump cover if your model has one. Keep a towel ready, because some water will come out.
• Machine shakes or does not spin. The load is probably unbalanced or too heavy. Redistribute the clothes, wash heavy items like blankets in smaller loads, and check that the machine stands level.
• Water leaks. Look at the door seal for trapped debris, check that the hose connections are tight, and use less detergent if there is too much foam.
• Bad smell. Wipe the door seal, run an empty hot wash with a washing machine cleaner, and leave the door open after use so the drum can dry.
• Loud noise. Coins, pins or bra wires can get stuck in the drum or pump. A deep rumbling sound during spin can mean a worn bearing, which needs a technician.
• Door will not open. Wait a few minutes after the cycle ends. If water is still inside, drain it first.

Keep it working longer

Do not overload the drum, check pockets before washing, use the right amount of detergent and clean the filter once a month. Small habits like these reduce breakdowns.

When to call a technician
