Oven not heating? What to check first
An oven that does not heat properly can have several causes depending on its type. Start with the simple checks below, and know where to stop.
Electric oven
- Check that the plug, socket and breaker have power. Try another appliance in the same socket.
- Look at the heating element inside the oven. Blisters, cracks or a broken part mean it needs replacing.
- If the oven heats unevenly or the temperature seems wrong, the thermostat may be faulty.
- Check that the door closes fully. A damaged hinge or seal lets the heat escape.
Gas oven
- If the burner does not light, clean the burner holes gently, because food and grease can block them.
- Listen for the ignition clicking. If there is no click or no spark, the igniter may be worn out.
- If you smell gas, do not turn on any switch or flame. Close the gas valve, open the windows and call a technician.
Microwave oven
If a microwave runs but does not heat, please do not open it. The inside holds a part that can store a dangerous electric charge even when the microwave is unplugged. This repair is for a trained technician only.
